What is Reflexology?
and how can it help you?
By inducing deep relaxation in mind and body, reflexology strengthens our body’s own self-healing mechanisms, supporting us towards full strength.
Medium to long-term treatment is often recommended to address cumulitive stress or support the management of a wide range of health conditions. Short term treatment can assist in recovery from illness or injury and both regular and one-off treatments can be effective in improving overall wellbeing.
If you have any questions about the treatment or how reflexology could help you, please do get in touch.
My Approach
My approach is client-led, meaning your treatment in sessions will be adapted to your individual needs. I begin treatment by applying relaxation techniques to the feet using reflexology wax or calendula powder. The reflexology treatment then continues with gentle massage used on nerve reflexes in the feet to stimulate circulation and energy flow.
My sessions are 75 minutes long, during which you will receive treatment in a reclining chair with a view of the sky in a homely, peaceful and private environment where you can simply lie back and listen to the birds. I am based near the centre of Swanage and just ten minutes’ walk from the sea.
About Reflexology
The feet have 7000 nerve endings and reflexology works with the body to stimulate these nerve pathways, improving circulation, removing congestion and relaxing tension.
Holistic reflexology is based on the concept of energy channels or ‘zones’ coursing the body and passing through specific organs, glands and body parts. It has been practiced as far back as 2300 BCE.
Adequate hydration, good nutrition, rest and exercise all nourish the quality of this internal energy system, which carries blood and nerve impulses throughout the body. A reflexologist applies massage techniques to reflexes found on the feet or hands to stimulate energy flow.
More than 75 percent of illness is due to and worsened by stress and tension. Reflexology can induce deep relaxation and improve circulation, helping to revitalise essential body functions including immunity, detoxification, good blood pressure and hormonal balance. It supports the individual’s own internal systems to rebalance overactive or underactive glands or organs.
Reflexology also supports good lymphatic drainage which is vital for the movement of fluids within our body tissue. The lymphatic system transports fat and fat soluble vitamins from the small intestine.
Lymphatic fluid seeps from blood capillaries to bathe our cells, helping to remove old cells and producing lymphocytes which protect us from harmful bacteria and viruses. If lymphatic circulation is poor, tissue becomes waterlogged, known as oedema.
Finally, the lymphatic fluid drains into the main circulation, bulking up blood volume to maintain good blood pressure.
